The intrinsic foot muscles and plantar aponeurosis (plantar fascia) should be palpated for tenderness, which may indicate midfoot plantar fasciitis, and for nodules in the fascia, which may indicate Dupuytren’s contracture. The plantar fascia (Fig. 16-22) should be palpatedalong its entire surface. Maintaining dorsiflexion of the toes will make the fascia more prominent and facilitate palpation. Nodules found on the skin, particularly on the ball of the foot (not usually on the weight-bearing area) are usually plantar warts.
