Freescale, spun off from Motorola in 2003, still designs ICs using its own proprietary microarchitecture and processor designs. Many of those chips are part of the company’s growing portfolio of IoT, Software Defined Networking (SDN), and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) products, but Freescale, like so many other semiconductor firms these days, is also heavily investing in licensed ARM-based chip designs.
