There was something completely jarring the first time I saw the infamous “Jordan meme” that featured Michael Jordan, perhaps one of the greatest basketball players ever to play, bawling his eyes out. The script overlaying the picture read something like, “When you see your girlfriend with another guy.” Soon enough, Michael Jordan’s crying face was everywhere, the meme receiving its fair share of fifteen-minutes of fame before disappearing into the ether of obsolescence. And for anyone who has had their head in the sand for the last few years, memes—pictures or short videos overlaid with often humorous text—have spread like, well, memes, creating instant viral sensations. Somebody will probably create a meme about people who don’t know about memes mocking others who create memes.
