One must assume that skilled attorneys are quite aware of this feature of memory and could use such leading questions to the advantage of their clients. If you began this psychology course believing, like many people do,that memory works like a video of life,it might surprise you to learn that is not the case. It may be quite unsettling to realize that memories are open to change and revision and that those distinct and confident childhood memories we cherish may be somewhat inaccurate or even flat out wrong. However,it also doesn’t make sense to think that we should evolve a system of memory that was usually wrong.Instead, fuzzy trace theory suggests that we use precious resources to form different types of memories based on our needs, ranging from verbatim,or exact accounts,to gist ,which means we retain the general idea of events. We use gist when a relatively vague level of information is sufficient because this is a more efficient use of resources. We use the more energy-intensive verbatim memories for situations that require detailed, accurate recall, such as remembering the periodic table of the elements in your chemistry class.
