The systematic literature search was carried out for articles using and/or examining motor test instruments in primary school age children (4 to 12 years old), published between January 1980 and September 2016 in English or German. Nine electronic databases were systematically searched: Education Research Complete, ERIC, IBSS, MEDLINE, PSYNDEXplus Tests, PubMed, SCOPUS, SpoLit and Web of Science. The search terms were generated by combining synonyms and similar words in four relevant categories using the logical operator “or”: (1) “primary education” or “elementary education” or “primary school” or “elementary school”; (2) “test” or “assessment” or “test instrument” or “test battery”; (3) “motor competence” or “motor qualification” or “motor skill” or “movement skill” or “motor ability”; and (4) “physical education”. Then, all categories (1–4) were combined using the logical operator “and”.
