The performance map is displayed on figure 1 showing areas of the EMD success and failure to correctly decompose the signal in two components. A perfect separation is represented by C(α,β) = 0 whereasC(α,β) = 1 corresponds to a wrong separation. From figure 1(b), one can easily notice that when the frequency ratio β becomes close to 1 or the amplitude ratio is high (log10α ≥ 1), the EMD fails to separate the components. In the next paragraph, we detail the approach we propose to improve the performance of the EMD in order to better separate two components having close frequencies.
