Weight-bearing forces to the toes are attenuated by the tension in the toe flexor tendons and the tendon sheaths. The interosseous and lumbrical muscles dynamically stabilize the toes on the floor in the tiptoe position.213 Failure of these muscles to function accounts for toe deformities such inversion and eversion rarely occur at any of the joints of ankle or foot. More often they occur as a component of supination or pronation.
