Three-column model of the distal end of the forearm
The 3-column model of the distal forearm is a simple concept that aids understanding some typical features of distal radial fractures and assists in planning internal fixation. It is analogous to, for example, the 2 columns of the distal humerus, or the 3 columns of the vertebrae.
The radial column comprises the radial styloid with the scaphoid facet.
The intermediate column comprises the lunate facet and the sigmoid notch.
The ulnar column is the ulnar head, with the distal radioulnar joint, the ulnar styloid and the triangular fibrocartilage.
