Paul knew all about unrealistic expectations. The church in Corinth was a classic case in point. The church didn’t like Paul’s looks, his personality, or his style. They said, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing” (2 Cor. 10:10). They let Paul know that they expected something quite different in their leader than him. It hurt Paul just as it hurts us. Second Corinthians is the most autobiographical of Paul’s letters, and its pages tremble with the agony and tears of personal and pastoral rejection.
