Although different stages and aspects of friendship have been well documented for typically developing children, almost no research has been conducted that applies this knowledge to the friendships between children with disabilities and typical peers. Instead, most researchers have focused on establish- ing whether or not such friendships exist in different settings. Many of these studies (Evans et al., 1992; Hall, 1994; Hall & McGregor, 2000; Kennedy & Itknonen, 1994; Nabors, 1997) have measured the peer status or acceptance of children with disabil- ities, rather than their friendships with their peers.
