Honing done directly after the hardening process (without any grinding operation) will be referred to as high performance (HP) honing [4,90,95,96,114,144]. Considerably higher machining stock allowances per flank up to 50 (100) mm must be removed. Although the machining stock allowances can be smaller compared to any grinding operation due to the particular easy
centring of the tool in the workpiece during the honing process, it still requires very good pre-machining. In any case HP honing requires position-controlled rotation with synchronisation between tool and workpiece. Now several relevant options of the honing process will be briefly described.
