How did you become interested in art?
My mum was very into art, although she spent her working life as a teacher. She painted and drew all her life, and went back to college and got a degree at the age of 60. We always had sketch books with us, collected material for collage wherever we went, and made frequent trips to London to see exhibitions. For many years The Summer Exhibition at Burlington House in London was a great pleasure for us to visit together.
You have a particular style. Can you tell us about it?
That’s a hard one. It evolved over the years I suppose, stemming from the drawing I used to do when I was younger. It’s hard to determine where a style comes from, but undoubtedly for me it’s the result of drawing with no particular end in mind, as well as the commissions I’ve worked on over the years. The commissions have a strong influence as they take you in a particular direction. Looking at artists too, possibly Matisse, David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin and Andy Warhol had an influence at the beginning, then Peter Blake, Ben Nicholson, Francis Bacon, Kikki Smith, and Guillermo Kuitca.
