Farther laterally, the common tendon of the extensor digitorum longus is seen and felt when the subject extends the toes (Fig. 16-23B). Its four branches can be distinguished where they develop, just distal to the ankle. If the subject everts and dorsiflexes the foot, the tendon of the peroneus tertius is usually observable just proximal to its insertion at the dorsum of the base of the fifth metatarsal.
