Taipei, Nov. 22 (CNA) The government on Sunday expressed its deep condolences over the death of Kim Young-sam, a former Korean president who had been a great friend of the Republic of China (ROC).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said President Ma Ying-jeou, Premier Mao Chi-kuo and Foreign Minister David Lin have asked the ROC's representative office in Seoul to convey the ROC government's and people's sincere sympathy to the family and the people of Korea on the passing of Kim earlier in the day.
Kim, Korea's 14th president from 1993-1998, had worked hard to promote the democratization of his country and on many occasions praised the ROC for sharing with the Republic of Korea the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and free-market economics, said the MOFA in a statement.
After stepping down as the ROC president, Kim visited Taiwan five times and received many ROC dignitaries in Korea, greatly contributing to increasing bilateral interactions and promoting substantive ties between the two countries, according to the statement.
