St. Thomas shows deep insight into the divine maternity in the Summa theologiae. Starting from the revealed truth that Mary is Mother of Jesus, St. Thomas examines the holiness of Mary, her virginity, her dignity. His homiletic writings, on the Hail Mary, for example, introduce also Mary’s mediation and queenship. He does not attempt a Mariological synthesis, and the necessity of Mary’s Redemption inhibits him in the matter of the Immaculate Conception
