Day 1—Planning: On the first day of the project, the teacher met with a group of interested children to discuss the building of a tree. Various ideas were presented, but the children decided that paper was too flimsy and pipes were too heavy. They decided to use cardboard boxes for the trunk of the tree and wrapping paper tubes for the branches. Day 2—Timber!: Construction of the tree began on the second day and initially went well. Working in small groups that rotated as children visited and returned from the school motor room, the children transformed the boxes into cylindrical shapes and taped them together to form the trunk. With help from the teacher, they cut holes for the branches and inserted the paper tubes. When the children decided they were ready, the teacher let go of the tree, which immediately fell to the ground. Stunned, the children began discussing the problem with their tree design.
