GROUND IMPROVEMENT
The results of soil investigations have been carefully studied and assessed for the
appropriate sub8)il parameter for engineering design of embankment. For embankment
in poor sub-soil conditions, various methods of ground improvement have been
considered. The method of ground improvement adopted depends on the following
factors:
Height of embankment
Existing ground conditions, including thickness, type and properties of soil strata
Time available for construction
Cost consideration
Site constraints, if any
Based on the sub-soil information generaly, the ground conditions supporting the
embankment can be classified into three categories based on the compressibility. The
brief desciption of each category in relation to the method of ground improvement
works to be adcpled is given below;
Low Compressibility (OJI +eo 0.1): Competent subsoii such as medium dense sand
or stiff cohesive soils, with adequate bearing capacity to suppolt the embankment. it is
envisaged that no specia foundation treatment is required Ior such conditions, except
reptacement / recompaction of the sub-grade.
