A 2 x 4 ANOVA with condition as the between factor and problem category as the within factor revealed a significant condition effect, F(1, 48) =8.73, p< .01, and problem category effect, F(3, 144) = 4.96; p < .01. Because the Condition x Problem category effect was marginally significant, F(3, 144) = 2.62, p = .053, we also tested on simple main effects. The experimental and control group differed significantly on the practiced problems, F(1, 188) = 7.22, p < .05, and the near transfer problems, F(1, 188) = 8.94, p < .01. The problem category effect was significant only for the experimental condition, F(3, 144) = 8.03, p < .01.
