I would like to talk about Ireland’s source of energy for electricity. The most important source of energy for our country is oil. 51% of our electricity is generated by oil-burning generators. Other fossil fuels such as coal 17% and natural gas 20% are also important. Ireland is a little unusual because 10% of electricity is generated by burning peat. There is no nuclear energy in Ireland. This is because of public fears about accident at nuclear plants and the high cost of building nuclear power station. Hydroelectricity produces about 2%. Other renewable sources of energy such as wind power, wave power and geothermal power are not as important. In 10 years, I think that our energy needs will be different. For example, the percentage for oil will probably decrease to about 30% and the example for wave power will increase to about 10 because of better technology.
